Sociopaths 101

I haven’t written in a couple days because I’ve been busy and kinda depressed about work and haven’t been able to focus my thoughts enough to articulate something worthwhile. But I feel I must comment on an episode of Oprah I saw Thursday about Scott Peterson. His sister was on talking about how narccistic he was. She also said his mother worshiped him and they all referred to him as “The Golden Boy” of the family. They had a psychiatrist on who was an expert in sociopatholgy and said Scott was a classic example. The shocking part to me was when the shrink said 1 in 25 people have no conscience, no ability to feel empathy for someone else. He said that our ability to feel empathy for someone else is miraculous and unexplained in animal biology, but it is very fragile and can be destroyed easily at an early age. He said these sociopaths had that ability to feel compassion for others broken as young children by some horrible event when someone failed to show empathy to them. I just can’t believe there are so many people out there who are so hollow. It’s scary. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since I consider people to be basically self-centered and not good deep down. It’s the Biblical view of total depravity. I believe it whole-heartedly. People only do good for selfish reasons. We aren’t capable of being selfless without the supernatural help of God the Holy Spirit. But enough about that.
