New and Improved Water Water Everywhere

Adopting from Haiti

Ok so it’s been pretty quiet around these parts, huh?

If you are super crazy observant, you will notice that my blog looks different. That’s because I finally made the leap to WordPress. I ended up not changing the design because that’s too much money and decision-making for my present state of being, and I still have much work to do on things like the sidebar and comment system, but at least we’re back up and running again.

An aside: did you know that the human brain has a limit to the number of decisions it can make in a day? That’s why people who need to make super important decisions a lot have to remove their choices from less important things. For example President Obama supposedly only has two colors of suits so he doesn’t have to use up his decision-making ability on what to wear every day. This aspect of biology is very interesting to me and the reason why I sometimes cannot choose what to do for dinner, even which restaurant to go to.

I don’t have anything super profound and specific to share with you today, but I needed to get this writing thing kicked off again so, a few updates.

We were planning to fly to Haiti on July 28th to meet our daughter, Baby R, who is now almost 14 months old and WALKING!! I’ve been lucky to get quite a few recent pics of her and I was distressed to see her in too many boy clothes so I went on a very minor shopping spree for girly outfits to bring with us on our trip.ย Adopting from Haiti

Unfortunately some differences of opinions/ideas/procedures between our agency and orphanage has caused us to indefinitely postpone the trip. Yes, extremely frustrating. I still haven’t figured out when we can go yet. I would get on a plane tomorrow if I could, but airline prices are only going up and we were also hoping my inlaws would come down to stay with our boys while we were in Haiti, so they need tickets too.

In the meantime, my grandparents are still living in their house and driving me to drink…Mike’s delicious homebrew.

My work schedule this summer is crazy because I’m trying to cut costs by not sending the kids to full day camps at $400 a week, so I’m making due with free Vacation Bible Schools at various churches around town. It’s not a lot of time to work, but every minute counts. When they ARE home the Mindcraft music is driving me insane too.

Why am I trying to cut costs? Oh because besides the 35k in adoption fees we have had to unexpectedly spend thousands to repair our air conditioning units and Mike’s car. Not to mention paying for my therapist and running shoes/club fees so I don’t actually lose my mind. Stress relief is good, y’all.

On the up side I have taken on meal planning and cooking this summer with a newfound passion. Ever since my dear friend Rachel moved to my neighborhood, I have been inspired by her passion for cooking. She unknowingly persuaded me I needed to start using my crockpot more, and in fact then I bought a larger crockpot so that I could actually roast a chicken per her super easy recipe.ย large crockpot for roasting chicken

Y’all, I roasted a chicken. On a weeknight. You have NO IDEA how huge this is. It was DELICIOUS! There are even leftovers which I will put to use in yet another weeknight recipe. It’s craziness over hear, I don’t even recognize myself.

I was only half kidding when I told Rachel I hoped her mad cooking skillz would magically rub off on me once she moved here.

In other news, marathon training season has officially begun AND I have started training for a triathlon. Crazy, right?! I’m swimming and biking and everything. Not as much as I really need to be, but hey…it’s something.

Unfortunately with the whole cost cutting/maybe going to Haiti thing, we aren’t able to take our annual family vacation to Pennsylvania and Bethany Beach this year. But we did spend a weekend at Sea World in June! More on that later. On Friday I took the boys down to join some friends who were camping at Brazos Bend State Park and we had so much fun that we may join them on their next camping trip this summer. They have gators there…tons of them!

If you’re still with me, thank you. This post is really a month’s worth of posts wrapped up in one. Hopefully it will spark more of the regular writing and photography you come hear to partake in. And I thank you SO much for that.

    1. Whew, still lots of bugs to work out over here…I’m not sure I’m happy with how my guy set it up but I’m trying to fix things a little at a time. Thanks!

  1. We wear our bracelets and pray for y’all and sweet Baby R every day <3
If there's anything that we can do to help, let us know!
Also – HUGE SMILE for the inspiration for you cooking!!! I'm so glad you loved that recipe!!! It's one of our favorites.

    1. Awe thanks girl! The chicken was so easy and my husband seemed impressed, that’s the important thing. Nathan liked it too but Alex was just not in the mood last night.

  3. You sound really really happy, Sarah. And good. Despite the hectic-ness of it all. I’m glad to hear that things are moving along in the right direction – mostly – for you to bring your wee one home. What cuteness! I will keep you all in my thoughts.

I’m guessing I won’t see you at Type-A this fall? If so, hooray! If not, then maybe next year!

Hope all’s well. Keep on kickin’ when it comes to fitness. YOu inspire me!

    1. I am not always so happy but I generally only blog when I am, so…it may sound that way. I try to stay positive though. My faith really buoys me through the tough stuff.

Nope, no Type-A for me this year ๐Ÿ™ Maybe next year! I’m glad to be inspiring anyone with the fitness because I was inspired by many others so I’m just passing it forward. If I can do it, anybody can!

  5. You write so well. I feel like you are talking to me, and I enjoy your humor. I, too, was planning to go to haiti, this month- this week actually. And I’m devastated that I can’t. I still am holding out hope for later in the month. But, I live on Pennsylvania! Where do you come to vacation? We will have to get our children together once we have all settled a bit!

    1. Hi Melissa! Thanks so much for the sweet compliment ๐Ÿ™‚ My husband and I are from PA, he is from Williamsport and I am from Philly. So our families are still there and we go visit them most every summer.

  7. Oh Sarah! I’m praying for you and sweet Baby R. I have another friend whose adoption seems to be taking forever … I can only imagine how difficult all of this has been.

Love that you’ve moved to wordpress! And can’t wait to see what new adventures await your family!!

    Miss you!!

    1. Thanks Teri Lynne! MIssing you too. Man I wish I could see more of you somehow. Adoption is more often than not a VERY long process, but it is a process that God uses to grow us in unexpected ways. Thanks for praying, sister!
