Fashion Friday: Closet Organization

A new year brings about in me a strong impulse to organize my life. I don’t think I’m alone, since I see retail ads in January heavily focused on products used for storage and organization. Even though we have tried to discourage people from buying us a lot of stuff for Christmas and we buy our kids less, it always ends up that we get a lot of new things we need to find places for. Plus there’s the whole daunting task of putting Christmas away for the year, which is what really kick starts that desire to clean and purge I have.

This year is a bit different because of one factor: Pinterest. I admit that I have fallen head over heels with this visual idea board, and recently it has led me to some awesome ideas for better organization in my home. One of the best ideas I discovered was so easy to implement, I tackled it yesterday.

This is one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” kinds of revelations. I happen to have a very large closet with plenty of rod hanging space but I have plum run out of shoe and boot storage space. (wee bit of a shoe problem…) So now shoes were starting to pile up on the floor and on top of each other…what a mess. I knew this would be easy and have a huge impact on the space.

Just look at this disaster. 

So first I scoured my closet for skirt hangers with adjustable clips. I had plenty and just had to switch some skirts to hangers with stationary clips. One thing that surprised me was just how many pairs of boots I really had. My favorite pair was being stored in it’s giant box slid under my clothes. So I got rid of that box and several other boxes. 

All this spurred me on to weed out, clean out, throw out and organize the rest of my shoes and then my clothes too. I filled several bags with things for a garage sale in the spring and moved them up to the attic for storage. Then I decided to sort the remaining clothes by color, something I’ve never done before. While doing that I suddenly realized that grouping by color might actually help me put a wider variety of outfits together. We’ll see.

Also yesterday I made a quick trip to Charming Charlie’s to return a dress my sister bought me for Christmas that was too small. There I stumbled up this amazing hanging jewelry organizer with clear pockets on both sides. I snatched it up immediately and went home to empty out my broken jewelry box and two drawers crammed full of jewelry. To say I have a lot of jewelry is an understatement. I still keep the fine jewelry elsewhere, but this is a great way for me to see and choose from all my costume baubles.

Then end result is a closet that feels even bigger than before and full of space. I feel very fortunate that I really do have more space than I need, but part of that is because I don’t feel the need to “hoard” stuff. Life is so much simpler when you aren’t completely overwhelmed by your stuff. 
Look, empty shelf space for more shoes! 
One of my next projects will be to renovate an old chest I got from my grandmother that I also keep in my closet for things like tights and lingerie. Some new paint and drawer pulls and I think it will be gorgeous…but I have no idea how to do this so…anyone local want to help teach me?

You may be wondering where my husband’s stuff goes. Well that section of the closet is behind me in all these photos and still pretty messy. I’m gonna tackle organizing that part this weekend.

  5. Hm, I’m not so sure the color is as awesome as maybe it looks in the photo? Maybe it is and I’ve just had it so long I can’t see that. But I hadn’t thought of Anthro, I’ll give them a look for sure 🙂
