What I Really Want This Holiday Season

As I write this my sweet friend Missy and her hubby and kids are on a plane to Ethiopia. They are finally going to meet their baby daughter, Bethie, who they have prayed for and waited for more than three years.
When I met Missy they had just completed and sent their adoption dossier to Ethiopia and were beginning the long wait for a referral. I was dreaming of someday adopting, but it was a firm no from my husband. That was a long time ago.
Now two years later she’s finally going to hold her little girl and I’m where she was then, finished our dossier and waiting for a referral. The referral is adoption-speak for being matched to a child that fits our request and getting to see photos, learning a name and learning some medical and social history.
This holiday season I would love nothing more than to get our referral for a little girl from Haiti. It could come any day really, or it could not come for quite awhile. We don’t know, but I am dying to learn her name and see her sweet face.
I want a face to make my dreams of her more vivid. I want a name to make my prayers more specific and heartfelt. It’s hard praying for an unnamed “little sister” as a family.
So what I really really want for Christmas is a phone call and an email that won’t come from Santa. I want to know my baby girl.
The question “What are you playing for?” is posed by a new movie coming out December 7th called Playing for Keeps. The movie stars Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel, plus Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid. Great cast, right? It’s a romantic comedy that I definitely want to see.

Your turn: What are you playing for?
