Samsung Verses Apple: Which Phone Wins?

So y’all know I love my Verizon iPhone, right? I’ve written about that plenty. The iPhone was officially my gateway drug that led me straight in the door to the cult of Apple and recently resulted in a total switch from PC to MacBook Pro.

Update on that: I am head over heels for my new laptop. I managed to install everything I need, including Windows 7, with ZERO frustration…unlike every PC I’ve ever had.

Back to phones. You may recall that I am a Verizon Wireless Ambassador, and in that role I have received a few products to try out. First I tried a Motorola Razr. Loved the 4G LTE speed, did not love the battery life. The Android OS was also occasionally buggy.

I also have the Motorola XYBoard tablet from Verizon. I like that thing a LOT. I loaded a ton of games on it and it entertained my children for both our four hour flights to Philly and back. It’s much easier to read blogs on it than on my phone yet it is still light and small enough to fit neatly in my purse.

More recently I got the Samsung Galaxy S3, and people…I am finally in love with a phone as much as I loved my iPhone when it was new. I love how the curved design feels in my hand, much sleeker and more comfortable than the iPhone. I love the camera. I love the way it handles my bajillion social media notifications. I carry both phones with me always but I prefer to use the Galaxy over the iPhone for my constant Facebooking and Tweeting.

You may or may not have heard that Apple sued Samsung for patent infringement recently and won a billion dollar judgement. I’m not really surprised…that’s the reason for patents and the iPhone IS a multi-billion dollar market for Apple. But check out this video about how Samsung designed the Galaxy. It’s pretty sweet really…also very Apple-ish.

Anyway the thing that helps the Samsung edge out the iPhone in this case is the Verizon 4G LTE network speed. It’s remarkable. But unlike the Razr, it has excellent battery life. I don’t have to worry about it being totally dead if I forget to charge it overnight. Win!

So that’s my thought on that. Will the patent judgement kill Samsung? I hope not. I love their phone.

  5. I have an app called Battery Saver + App Killer. I think it helps some, though the battery was good before I installed it too. You definitely have to make sure apps are “killed” and not just closed, plus I don’t enable push notifications on very much, and I don’t have GPS enabled on most apps. I use Facebook for Android, Twitter for Android, Tweetdeck for Android and Instagram. Oh and Foursquare. Also I upload video to YouTube every once in awhile.

    One thing I can’t speak to is battery life when you actually talk on the phone a lot. I don’t use it to talk that much because nobody has that number.

  7. I too bow down to the Apple gods. I switched from a PC to an iMac when Microsoft introduced Vista. I purchased the one-to-one from Apple and love going in for hands-on tutorials. I just don’t know if I can switch from an iPhone to anything else.
