Back in the Saddle

No, school has not started yet. That’s next week. But after weeks away on vacation and then staying home all last week, Alex and Nathan are back at summer camp this morning and I am back to working in peace and quiet. 

Except for the three ladies busily vacuuming and chatting away in Spanish behind me. 
And I am still a bit hampered by not yet having recovered all my files from my dead laptop. Thankfully a very smart friend volunteered to do that for me yesterday…I hope he can. 
But I have a trusty new assistant to make work a little more fun this morning. It’s this: 
For years, actually decades, I have scoffed at people who claimed Apple computers were superior. It started even before college, but intensified when a good friend of mine in college worshipped at the alter of Apple and went to work for them. I believe he still does. I ignored and dismissed all his raving about OS this and that, happily carrying on with most of the world that used PCs. 
After all, Macs were only for artsy fartsy types, not engineers. 
The Hubbells have been an all-Dell, all the time, family for quite awhile. My company, Entex, was also an all-Dell company. But Windows Vista gave me fits. For the past four years I have never NOT had an error window open on my laptop while I worked. I just learned to ignore it. 
Then I became one of those artsy fartsy types through my photography. I learned how vastly superior iMovie is to Windows Movie Maker. At least two dozen people told me that Macs don’t get buggy or crash like PCs do. 
Then my laptop finally died. No amount of coaxing could bring it back. So I made the leap and headed to the Apple store early in the morning to try to beat the crowds and chaos that I hate so much there. I bought the MacBook Pro and a bunch of necessary software and proceeded to sit down with an Apple Business expert who walked me through setting everything up. 
I mean everything. He helped me download a whole bunch of software updates. He helped me upgrade to the new OS, Mountain Lion. He helped me install MS Office and even set up both my business and personal email accounts. All that took well over an hour. I was kind of blown away. 
Had I just bought a new computer anywhere else, I would have let it sit for hours or maybe days while I nervously avoiding tackling all that set up stuff. 
So I’ve been working on this Mac for a couple days now and so far it has been nothing but smooth. 
Consider me a new convert.

  4. Yay, I love apple products. We’re still PC at home, but I can see why people are going over. One note of warning, you still need to back up your files. Mac’s very very very rarely crash, but my best friend actually completelly crashed her Mac 2x (losing TONs of stuff in the process), so do yourself a favor and back up just in case.
